Wednesday Poetry Prompts: 718

Every Wednesday, Robert Lee Brewer shares a prompt and an example poem to get things started for poets. This week, write a cozy poem.

For this week's prompt, write a cozy poem. Everyone's definition of cozy is probably different. I find a good murder-mystery or epic fantasy quite cozy, while my wife Tammy leans toward the movies Night of the Living Dead and Halloween. Still other folks prefer a romance or think of a fireplace and hot chocolate.

Regardless of your definition of cozy, write a poem (or three) about it this week.

Remember: These prompts are springboards to creativity. Use them to expand your possibilities, not limit them.

Here’s my attempt at a Cozy Poem:

“we hear the thunder first,” by Robert Lee Brewer

& then, we notice the leaves
letting go of their trees
to fly across the lawn
until half of them are gone,

& then, we spy another flash
before we hear another crash
of the atmosphere in shock
from the air growing so hot,

& then, we laugh a little loud
to brave the coming clouds
making the day feel almost night
even by the lightning's light,

& then, it has already passed
so that we wish it still could last,
but storms must always move on
& leave us with a new birdsong.
