New Village Press: Market Spotlight
For this market spotlight, we look at New Village Press, a publisher focused exclusively on grassroots community building.
Based in New York City, New Village Press is a nonfiction publisher of books in the humanities and social sciences. Established in 2005, this publisher is best known for books in urban sociology, community cultural development, and healthy city design.
The editors say, "Our titles aim to animate emerging movements in societal transformation with true stories about collaborative community building and the creative new roles that artists and scholars, citizens and planners can play in public life."
What They're Looking For
New Village Press claims to be the first publisher to focus exclusively on grassroots community building. As such, writers should only pitch projects that support that goal. A few recent titles include: Portraits of Earth Justice: Americans Who Tell the Truth, by Robert Shetterly; We Built a Village: Cohousing and the Commons, by Diane Rothbard Margolis; and Divining Chaos: The Autobiography of an Idea, by Aviva Rahmani.
The editors say, "The mission of New Village Press is to promote and enrich public discussion and understanding of issues vital to the development of healthy, creative, and socially just communities. To that end, New Village publishes transdisciplinary books that animate emerging movements in societal transformation."
