Wednesday Poetry Prompts: 717

Every Wednesday, Robert Lee Brewer shares a prompt and an example poem to get things started for poets. This week, write a six words poem.

Quick reminder: I recently shared the guidelines for the 2024 November Poem-A-Day Chapbook Challenge. Click here to learn more.

For this week's prompt, write a six words poem. Of course, you could write a poem in six words (your choice), or write a poem using each of the following six words:

  • dream
  • fall
  • own
  • rain
  • tree
  • window

Whether you use the six above or just use six period, have fun poeming this week.

Remember: These prompts are springboards to creativity. Use them to expand your possibilities, not limit them.

Note on commenting: If you wish to comment on the site, go to Disqus to create a free new account, verify your account on this site below (one-time thing), and then comment away. It's free, easy, and the comments (for the most part) don't require manual approval (though I check from time to time for those that do).

Here’s my attempt at a Six Words Poem:

“Comet of Regret,” by Robert Lee Brewer

Last night, I laid my head on a pillow
& listened to the rain hit my window
as the wind threatened to make the trees break.

In my last dreams, you answered when I called
even when the summer fell into fall
& I owned all my bittersweet mistakes.
