Wednesday Poetry Prompts: 714

Every Wednesday, Robert Lee Brewer shares a prompt and an example poem to get things started for poets. This week, write an autumn poem.

For this week's prompt, write an autumn poem. Think about what autumn means to you and tap into that. Is it football games? Spooky stories? Falling leaves? Pumpkin-flavored (fill-in-the-blank)? Whether you like sweater weather or trunk-or-treating, poem your way into the season.

Remember: These prompts are springboards to creativity. Use them to expand your possibilities, not limit them.

Here’s my attempt at an Autumn Poem:

“Equinox,” by Robert Lee Brewer

Each evening creeps closer to the day,
and the moon's no longer full, but my
mind is caught in this season's soft sway
without a care for reasoning why.
I see birds evacuating south,
but I have no plans to leave. My soul
is captured by the shape of your mouth
and every moment you let me hold
you close and dream of what is to come
within this fragile autumn desire
that weathers the low and ghostly hum
of the bummed summer departing choir.
Through every season know this is true:
My heart is always beating for you.
