6 Books to Cozy Up With This Winter

Here are 6 book recommendation perfect for winter reading.

One of my favorite things to do in the winter is cozy up with a blanket, a warm cup of coffee, one of my cats, and a novel. I know, I’m a walking (or sitting) cliché. But when it’s cold outside and the Ohio days are overcast more often than not, I want to be transported somewhere else—even if that somewhere else is also wintery.

In that spirit, here are 6 wintery books to curl up with on your next snow day.

Romances

Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory

I credit Jasmine Guillory with rekindling my love for romance novels and this one is not to be missed. She is brilliant at creating romantic tension and obstacles to the HEA that truly feel insurmountable—just like life. Plus, you know her characters will be surrounded with mouth-watering food!

Description:

Vivian Forest has been out of the country a grand total of one time, so when she gets the chance to tag along on her daughter Maddie’s work trip to England to style a royal family member, she can’t refuse. She’s excited to spend the holidays taking in the magnificent British sights, but what she doesn’t expect is to become instantly attracted to a certain private secretary, his charming accent, and unyielding formality.

Malcolm Hudson has worked for the Queen for years and has never given a personal, private tour—until now. He is intrigued by Vivian the moment he meets her and finds himself making excuses just to spend time with her. When flirtatious banter turns into a kiss under the mistletoe, things snowball into a full-on fling.

Despite a ticking timer on their holiday romance, they are completely fine with ending their short, steamy affair come New Year’s Day...or are they?

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren

If you’ve ever wanted a do-over for a choice you’ve made in your romantic life, this is the book for you. It’s like Groundhog Day, but for the holidays.

Description:

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions.

But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.

The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

Jam-packed with yuletide cheer, an unforgettable cast of characters, and Christina Lauren’s trademark “downright hilarious” (Helen Hoang, author of The Bride Test) hijinks, this swoon-worthy romantic read will make you believe in the power of wishes and the magic of the holidays.

Mystery/Thrillers

Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney

A couple struggling with their marriage wins a surprise trip to an isolated home in the middle of a snowstorm in Scotland—what could possibly go wrong? Even the cover makes me feel cold.

Description:

Think you know the person you married? Think again…

Things have been wrong with Mr and Mrs Wright for a long time. When Adam and Amelia win a weekend away to Scotland, it might be just what their marriage needs. Self-confessed workaholic and screenwriter Adam Wright has lived with face blindness his whole life. He can’t recognize friends or family, or even his own wife.

Every anniversary the couple exchange traditional gifts--paper, cotton, pottery, tin--and each year Adam’s wife writes him a letter that she never lets him read. Until now. They both know this weekend will make or break their marriage, but they didn’t randomly win this trip. One of them is lying, and someone doesn’t want them to live happily ever after.

Ten years of marriage. Ten years of secrets. And an anniversary they will never forget.

Rock Paper Scissors is the next exciting domestic thriller from the queen of the killer twist, New York Times bestselling author Alice Feeney.

New England White by Stephen L. Carter

A car crash on a snowy New England road in the dead of winter opens this political thriller that eventually involves the White House, the president, and Ivy League schools. Stephen L. Carter, a professor of law at Yale, writes some of the smartest, most intense legal thrillers I’ve ever read.

Description:

Lemaster Carlyle, the president of the country's most prestigious university, and his wife, Julie, the divinity school's deputy dean, are America's most prominent and powerful African American couple. Driving home through a swirling blizzard late one night, the couple skids off the road. Near the sight of their accident they discover a dead body. To her horror, Julia recognizes the body as a prominent academic and one of her former lovers. In the wake of the death, the icy veneer of their town Elm Harbor, a place Julie calls "the heart of whiteness," begins to crack, having devastating consequences for a prominent local family and sending shock waves all the way to the White House.

Literary Fiction

Winter by Ali Smith

All of Ali Smith’s Seasonal Quartet is worth reading (along with Companion Piece which came out in early 2022 and is recommended by WD editor Michael Woodson here), but 2017’s Winter is the obvious choice for this time of year.

Description:

Winter. Bleak. Frosty wind, earth as iron, water as stone, so the old song goes. And now Art’s mother is seeing things. Come to think of it, Art’s seeing things himself.

When four people, strangers and family, converge on a fifteen-bedroom house in Cornwall for Christmas, will there be enough room for everyone?

Winter. It makes things visible. Ali Smith’s shapeshifting Winter casts a warm, wise, merry and uncompromising eye over a post-truth era in a story rooted in history and memory and with a taproot deep in the evergreens, art and love.

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra

Another book in which even the cover makes me feel cold is A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, especially while we follow Havaa as she struggles to survive the winters in the forests and villages of war-torn Chechnya.

Description:

In a small rural village in Chechnya, eight-year-old Havaa watches from the woods as Russian soldiers abduct her father in the middle of the night and then set fire to her home. When their lifelong neighbor Akhmed finds Havaa hiding in the forest with a strange blue suitcase, he makes a decision that will forever change their lives. He will seek refuge at the abandoned hospital where the sole remaining doctor, Sonja Rabina, treats the wounded.

For Sonja, the arrival of Akhmed and Havaa is an unwelcome surprise. Weary and overburdened, she has no desire to take on additional risk and responsibility. But over the course of five extraordinary days, Sonja’s world will shift on its axis and reveal the intricate pattern of connections that weaves together the pasts of these three unlikely companions and unexpectedly decides their fate. A story of the transcendent power of love in wartime, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena is a work of sweeping breadth, profound compassion, and lasting significance.
