Developing rhino skin is part of the process of becoming a writer. Critique groups can challenge writers' rhino skin. Here are some tips:
The Etiquette of Receiving Critique:
- Keep your mouth shut. As much as possible. No defending. No arguing. No one is going to force you to implement any of the ideas put forth. Take what is useful and silently disregard what is not.
- Take notes. It shows that you are paying attention.
- Thank them. These people read your work and thought about it. Thank them. And make it sound like you mean it. Later, after your hackles settle down, review the notes. If several people made the same comment, they might be right.
