To me, it’s not about success anymore, it’s about getting these crazy ideas onto paper (so to speak). I’ve had stories, story ideas, and characters running through my head since I was 10 years old! Everyone that has ever heard my ideas, or my stories, have told me I should be a writer. I don’t know if I’m good enough, But it is actually fun to write down the stuff that runs through my head! Maybe I will be good enough to make real money out of it, maybe it will only be a hobby, but I have to write.
I will consider myself a succes when people start asking me about some of my characters, or wanting to read the next post. Better yet: when I can make a living letting the masses into my mind. Scary thought, that!

Hmm, this must be a trick question is the first thing that comes to mind. There are only two responses to this that I can come up with. The first and quite cheesy one is that as a writer I will consider myself a success when I have recognition for what I write from others for having been published in some forum or another. Like say having written a book or a lengthy article for a popular magazine. Oh boy I finally got published! Yeah, right. A small thrill.

Having said that with tongue in cheek I now move on to a better and perhaps more honest answer. Seriously I would consider myself a success as a writer if I could write a novel and sell a million copies and make a lot of money. Isn’t that really what everybody wants? If there were that many people buying a book that you wrote it shows they like what you write which gives you recognition and appreciation. Not to mention all the money you’re going to rake in from the sales of the books. Woo Hoo! The sweet smell of success.

To get some experience with writing I discovered this web site and thought I would try my hand at writing a few pieces using these prompts. I thought they were so so, until I looked at what other people were writing. Compared to the other stories mine looked like something a kid from grade 5 wrote. Are you kidding me I thought. I’ll never be able to write as well as anyone else writes. Anyway this is kind of depressing. But because of it I did sign up for a class on writing to get some much needed help.

So back to the success thing I don’t really see any in my future as of yet and probably never will but hey, it just might be fun to try. When it comes down to it, that’s about all anyone can really do. Writing is like buying a lottery ticket. You can’t win if you don’t buy one or as in the case of writing you can’t be successful if you don’t try. (And have talent and probably a lot of luck.)
