According to Alyce Miller, six of the biggest pitfalls in writing directly from true life are as follows:
- You have either too much or too little distance.
- You allow "real-life" plot to drive the story rather than exploring other routes.
- You neglect character development.
- You explain why everything happened the way it did.
- You know exactly where the story is going.
- You fail to include essential details that convince and give texture.
