Cro Cumaisc Etir Casbairdni Ocus Lethrannaigecht: Poetic Forms

Poetic forms are great poetic games for poets to play with. Today, we look at the cro cumaisc etir casbairdni ocus lethrannaigecht, an Irish quatrain form.

Cro Cumaisc Etir Casbairdni Ocus Lethrannaigecht Poems

The cro cumaisc etir casbairdni ocus lethrannaigecht is an Irish poetic form, which means there are quite a few rules about rhyming and syllables (plus, it has a really long name). But, like other Irish poetic forms, it’s fun once you get the rules down.

Here are the guidelines:

  • Quatrain (or four-line) stanzas
  • Seven syllables in lines one and three; five syllables in lines two and four
  • Lines one and three end with a three-syllable word
  • Lines two and four end with a one-syllable word
  • Rhyme scheme in each stanza: abab

Let’s try it out.

Here’s my attempt at a cro cumaisc etir casbairdni ocus lethrannaigecht:

Bucket List, by Robert Lee Brewer

This tale is not compelling,
but it will be sold
to those who are rebeling
against what they’re told,

and if their hope’s eroding,
what else can be done
to get their faith exploding
into what is fun?

    Snowshoeing

    So snowshoeing gracefully
    How can you, I ask
    Without getting facefully
    It is a hard task

    I trudge along awkwardly
    Trying to stay up
    I tip over downwardly
    Embarrassing? Yup.

    I struggle up giggling
    Determined to try
    And after some wriggling
    I’m up by and by

    WHERE’S SNOWSHOE THOMPSON?

mural of our historic skier of U.S. Mail, Genoa, NV to Placerville CA

    ALL SALES FINAL! precisely
    over public art:
    a fine mural concisely
    showing our town’s heart –

    Snowshoe’s wintery Sierra
    now by White Sales bleached.
    Yet his timeless Ski-era
    Snowshoe’s mail has reached.

    That form’s name is frightening,
    I said with a sigh,
    but it just needs tightening
    and then it can fly.

    I got past the distressing
    and long Gaelic name,
    and soon I was progressing
    and the stanzas came.

    So now I am announcing
    I’ve finished the task.
    But if it needs pronouncing,
    please don’t even ask.

    The phrase is not familiar
    Never in my ear
    No thought juveniliar
    But it calls me dear

I will explore heart and eye
    The beat and the light
    My brain embracing on high
    Like a racing kite

A THOUGHT ABOUT WRITING A CRO CUMAISC ETIR CASBAURDNI LETHANNIGECHT

    The very name, recklessly,
    just makes my brain ring,
    but I proceed, fecklessly,
    to mess with the thing

    and I wade in, merrily,
    until I get stuck,
    after which I, verily,
    curse the rotten luck

    that made me think, easily,
    I’d master the form,
    but now I sit, queasily,
    in search of some norm.
