Here’s my attempt at a Love and/or Anti-Love Poem:

“in other words”

i’ve tried to leave you
but i run better than i hide
& when you find me
you always show your better side

so i guess i could try running
but we both know how that game ends
& there’s always a chance
you’ll tire of hunting me down again

roberttwitterimageRobert Lee Brewer loves writing love poems, especially ones that could turn either way at a moment’s notice. That sort of vulnerable tension is what helps a high seem higher and a low seems lower. He’s kind of bummed that there are only four days of this year’s challenge left to go.

Brewer is Senior Content Editor of the Writer’s Digest Writing Community, which means he gets to do a million things to help writers find more success with their writing (including this blog). He’s also the author of Solving the World’s Problems (Press 53).

    MORNING BREATH

    The cup on
    my bathroom counter
    holds two toothbrushes
    and the memory of
    minty breath and
    mornings spent cuddling
    under that pearly
    white down comforter;
    of lips on
    the lookout for
    a surprise attack
    on cheeks or
    forehead or any
    patch of kissable
    skin, which shivered
    each time you

    smiled at me.

I am sitting here, thinking of you.
All the ways I have tried to write you down have failed, and,
Closing my eyes, I can barely see you.
I seem to forget you and find you again and again like you are the last piece,
Of the grand puzzle of existence. And I know you are.
When people sing of love I see you,
But when you are there, I don’t know what to do.
Hated then slowly trusted until I entered the mines of the friendzone.
I see you all laughing, thinking of another Taylor Swift song and I laugh with you.
But I’m not here to complain. Because I love him.
I am here for others, for those lonely, afraid, those who have lost all hope,
    Of love and help.
There are people who have felt like you. And you deserve love just like so many others like you,
And the love I feel is something I will never complain about,
For it is so more than so many have.
I am here to give you hope, that things can get better, and you can be understood.
I am here to give myself hope, should this all go to ashes as it might,
For it might very soon, I am scared.
This hope a boy has given me no one else has.
And I am here, proud, he isn’t fictional! He isn’t half around the globe!
He isn’t a bad guy or a bully! He doesn’t even like alcohol!
He is my friend and I was stupid enough to fall for him,
    Like I do every time.
But every time things changed. I changed, the world changed, they changed.
This time we stayed together, we didn’t change.
We grew and learned but don’t you see the same horizons?!
The same oceans and beaches, and mountains and trees.
The wind is so strong and the sky so blue!
And I in this haze. I seem to only see you.
You are there, the only one ever to be in my wake dreams,
You of all people. You are always there.
I wasn’t ever able to see your face. You were a blur, a distant memory.
But last week, late, about to fall into slumber,
You were there and for the first time, I saw your face,
Drawn into the painting of my dreams like you were always there,
Tears rolling down your cheeks and down mine,
You look back at me, standing by the cliff and I knew,
I knew you weren’t going to go as I took your hand in the soft warmth of the sunlight,
I took your warm, living hand into mine as we looked to the end of the world,
But it was not the end of the world, it was the start.
It was clean and new, unwritten,
Waiting to be written by you and by me.

    Love, Lyrics and Lullabies

    Love by any other
    Name is still love.
    Fickle, Fair
    Or chum.
    The word love,
    So many uses.
    I can only hope
    To figure out some.

    Love Notes

    left for me
    he knows I need
    affection assurances
    of his love
    so he writes
    caring words
    heals my soul
    trusting myself
    I start writing poems
    to my beloved
