2015 November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 24

For experienced PAD challengers, today’s final “Two for Tuesday” prompt was likely easy to guess:

  1. Write a love poem.
  2. Write an anti-love poem.

Your choice.

Revision doesn’t have to be a chore–something that should be done after the excitement of composing the first draft. Rather, it’s an extension of the creation process!

In the 48-minute tutorial video Re-creating Poetry: How to Revise Poems, poets will be inspired with several ways to re-create their poems with the help of seven revision filters that they can turn to again and again.

Here’s my attempt at a Love and/or Anti-Love poem:

“Initiation”

Jesse came in the night
& Clara was ready alright
for them both to take flight

beneath the silver moon
but their trip ended soon
as Jesse was a mere goon

a pawn for his master
who a hundredfold faster
& intent upon disaster

he took Clara in his arms
without a hint of charm
& intent on causing harm

so she let out a shriek
& he left her there…weak

    I DON’T LOVE THE WAY…

I don’t love the way you make me feel so smart
every time we play Jeopardy and I get some right
I don’t love how you still want to make love…
    all the time
I don’t love that you buy me presents for no reason
    at all
I don’t love that you bring me white chocolate raspberry
cheesecake even though it costs the earth
I don’t love that you buy me flowers in the middle
of the winter, all sorts of days
I don’t love that you come to listen to me read my
poetry and beam as if I am famous
I don’t love that you talk about our marriage as if it’s
    the most precious thing ever
I don’t love anything about you at all.

    Oldest Tool on the Shelf

    Love
It’s a tool to bind oneself to another,
to use against another in ways that at first would seem
    unbelievable.
But you get sucked in, stop being you and being
who they want you to be.

    Do yourself a favor,
    don’t be in love.
    Be your best,
    to yourself.
Only then will you be any good to anyone else.

And if you have to love someone,
    love yourself.
    But don’t be a jerk.
Treat yourself the way you would want someone else to treat you.

    Then, and only then,
take a chance on someone else.

thats when you know its real

after all the fireworks, after the long walks on the beach

after teeth bumps and first kisses

after the fire, the passion, and wild attraction

hands grabbing here and here, when hands have had enough

once all the magic seems gone, only then will you know if its real

if all the lights start to fade and only one bulb flickers at the end of the hall way

you better hope with everything you’ve got that the shadows on the ground

stretch out in black and white patterns of love

    Ask Mom

    He says,
    “Mom loves you
    better than me.”
    She says, “You mean:
    ‘Mom loves you
    better than I,’ –
    and that’s not true.”
    Mom says,
    ‘Two different sentences,
    two different meanings;
    both are correct, but
    only one is true –
    no matter who says it.’
(This old girl’s still got it
    when it counts.)

I was asked by a stranger to write a love poem. All he knows about me is that I am a poet. All I know about him is that he is Muslim, and in love. Here is my effort:

    Love Poem (for Bolt)

When I see your sparkling eyes, I see our love.
The lilt of your voice is music in my ears.
You are the most precious flower in my world.
To kiss you would be to taste honey for the first time.
You are the gems of the stars of heaven.
Your heartbeat sings inside of mine.
You are my sacred, my eternity, my divine.
Take my hand in your hand forever, my soft, my sweet.
Together we shall climb the misty mountains of time.

    Hands

    Our hands had youth
    Our hands were new
Like feelings of the morning dew
    Our hands connected
    Our hands combined
Though you were not first to be mine
Our hands together felt so foreign
But something was there that would warrant
    Our affection through our fingers
    Emotional satisfaction lingers
As they clasp and come apart
Our hands, they age like wine, like art
The romance our hands brought all those years
Despite the doubts, the clouds of fear
    Still intact, still in bliss
Ever since our skin’s first kiss
    Even into death, we know
Our hands won’t let each other go

    Love’s Pros and Cons

    Love creating life
    inspires expression’s best
    always giving more.

    Love’s absence kills
    all creative direction.
    Emptiness is king.

    LOVE IS ACTION

Love, so often used as a noun,
    is not tangible at all,
we can’t touch, see or taste it,
no matter how big or how small.

Love is a verb, an action word,
something we express and we do.
It’s a very popular writing topic,
shown from many a point of view.

In the name of love, there’s been tragedies,
    jealousies, violence and rage,
it’s been talked about throughout history
and portrayed in movies and on stage.

    Love is an internal possession
to give and receive every day.
We are meant to love one another
and not let differences get in our way.

Peace on earth relies on love,
    concern for each others needs,
    living in perfect harmony,
being a rose within the weeds.

Without love, life is mere existence,
    doing routines day after day
    with no sense of belonging.
To have love we must give some away.

    How wonderful and magical
we feel when we’re in love.
We truly are on top of our world –
there’s nothing we can’t rise above.

    Let’s turn all negative thinking
    into positive, loving thought
by spreading love, joy and peace
As for thousands of years, we’ve been taught.

    It’s Over

My stay at the Heartbreak Hotel may be nearing its end
I have stayed in all the different suites:
    Heartache, Self-Doubt, and Unanswered Questions,
and I’ve started to pack to possibly go Home in the near future
    but unfortunately,
    I know a few friends
who may be checking in for an open-ended stay…
so a few “lessons” this “Teacher” has “learned” recently …
The preponderance of advice is always so cliche-
    “Things happen for a reason”
    “You will get through this”
“You will be a better and stronger person because of this”
and I find myself doling out some of the same advice
that my well-meaning friends have given me
    but
    Bottom Line:
    Heartbreak and Heartache stink
    It’s not fun
and no one ever signs up for this- ever!
Accept that things will get better-
you will not always feel this badly
    but-
they may not get better for a long time
    and that’s ok…
    In the meantime-
    it hurts like hell.
These feelings have to be sat with,
intensely felt, and handled with care
for as long as it takes until you feel yourself again
and only YOU will know when that is.
You can cry, scream, curse, talk it through over and over again-
whatever it is that helps you get through this-
there is no right or wrong way to deal with this (unless you don’t).
But every day, hour, minute out
gets you closer to the other side of it.
You think you are doing better and then out of the blue-
a reminder and back you go
(you may have to take some steps backward in order to move forward).
    One thing for sure…
you will be changed because of this experience-
you can NOT do this alone (don’t even try)
And you WILL heal in your own time –
    in your own way-
    And when you do –
when you finally pack it up
and raise the shades in your “room” to let the light back in
your Life will be outside waiting for you
    to welcome you Back Home!

      Wishing Stars
I wished upon a star and caught you from afar.
The moon shone its beam and swept
us along the night course of falling in love
in and amongst the moon and stars.

    Summer Love

I anticipated our reuniting for a long time…
at the beginning I felt like we had all the time in the world-
from early in the morning to late at night…
I gave up my current passions for you~
    You became my passion-
my reason for rising each day-
    anticipating what was in store
as we got into our familiar routine.
    I basked in your warmth;
as I lay lazily in your light
    as if glowing from within
    drenched in your heat
your breath was warm against my skin…
    You were there for me-
indulging me in my every whim and vice-
    your days- pure poetry
    of cloud-speckled unending time
    while your nights sparkled
    with the secrets of stars
and punctuated by the glow of fireflies..
    But…
I have recently felt a tap on my shoulder
    and –
    it’s getting more insistent…
    garnering my attention-
A new love I will soon be falling for…
I’m feeling pensive about our parting-
there are so many things I still wanted to do with you
    and now I won’t be able;
    something is changing
    it’s just not the same~
but I know in my heart –
    I will see you again
and we’ll pick up where we left off-
    I hope……
    I don’t really mean to be fickle~
but you seasons are just so seductive for me…

    LOVE IN SILENT REFLECTION

The crested moon lays shadows softly
across the pristine blanket of white.
It is another perfect December night.

It is quite the site, blue spruce and evergreen,
pock the scene, elf couples on a stroll.
Everything under control near the North Pole!

And I look out from my comfortable chair.
It is there where I settle for a quite respite
before the activities get hectic. In spite

of this night, my mind is busy, moving
between naughty and nice, no roll of the dice,
I take that decision seriously so I do check twice.

“Momma” comes with more cocoa. She knows
when my mug is empty and my heart is full.
I pull her in for a gentle kiss. I would be a fool

if I was remiss in that simple show of affection.
She knows. She all ways knows. Again it snows.
Laying a finger aside of my nose, she knows.

Back to work in the placidity of my thoughts.
No words need to be spoken, just that one small token
And she knows. Christmas approaches, no joking!

I sip down the frothy brew, watching for signs.
They reflect my love of the season in this silent pause.
This is my annual cause. I am Santa Claus.

    Jimi and Mimi

Jimi used to call me Mimi
when everybody else was calling me Shelly.
He used to say Shelly had no sunshine
in it and that it was too easy. Now, Mimi,
he said, had the electricity of the city
in it and that made me smile
’cause only Jimi could see those things
in a name. He used to say I was too pretty
for the Pacific Northwest and that
“Mimi” was my ticket out of here.
I had wanted him to be my ticket, though,
ever since he picked up that guitar, but
when he left he stayed gone
and mama and babysis said, “Shelly, I told you
    he ain’t love you none.”

  13. Shennon

    I caress the worn cover
    embossed by the name
    of my grandfather, and the
title of his favorite book –
    “Holy Bible”.

    Turning page upon page
    of practically transparent
    parchment paper,
    trying not to increase
    in size unintentional tears,
    I pause frequently to read
    highlighted passages.

    At one point the paper
    is highly tarnished,
    as if the book’s been
    left open in the sun
    for the length of
    a season or more.

    Words of comfort stream
    forth from these pages,
    penetrating the grief I feel
at the loss of this man
    I loved so dearly.

    I’m convinced that these
    same passages lent solace
    to my grandfather when
    grandma passed away.

    I clutch the open book
    to my chest.
    A solitary tear spills
    from my left eye,
    down the book’s
    leather spine.

    What a special gift
    to be able to connect
    and share feelings
    with my grandfather
    across the realm
    of transcendence.
