A Checklist for the Short Story Writer

Apply this checklist to your own work and see how it causes you to change direction or, most important, improve.

Ask yourself, “Is the”:

  • material appropriate in intensity and scope?
  • writing appealing to the five senses?
  • point of view clear and consistent?
  • tension established in the first paragraph? Is there a point of crisis, revelation or recognition?
  • story resolved?
  • language of the story appropriate? Abstract or vague? Verbs passive? Modifiers excessive?
