I have some non fiction articles which I would like to submit to various magazines.

I hate to use the salutation, “To Whom It May Concern,” in a letter.

But what am I to do if I don’t know the editor’s name.

Your help and edification will be greatly appreciated.

Most magazines (the paper ones, anyway) include a list of editorial staff at the front of each issue. Also, these editors are listed somewhere in the “About” section of the magazine’s Web site (my experience). So if you can determine the correct department, you can usually find the right editor.

Otherwise, “To Whom It May Concern:” may seem bad to you, but it’s perfectly acceptable and professional.

Address to the proper contact on the editorial staff, and ensure with a quick phone call to the main number that they are still with the publication.
