In dialogue, spell it out. No one can speak a number. It’s impossible. That’s why we have words that represent numbers. In articles, this page sums it up pretty well. http://www.grammarbook.com/numbers/numbers.asp
Rule one is fuzzy because it depends on who you’re writing for. Just be consistent, and you’ll do fine.
James, this website is perfect. How do you find these reference sites? I really do wish there was a resource annotated bibliography somewhere on the forum. This and many of the other links are lost in the threads.
My numbers are not in dialogue, but they are in the story. I think I am going to write them out as words, and just be consistent, right?
