Would either of you recommend getting a copyright from the library of congress or should I avoid that route?

…no… it’s not necessary and not done by the pros… the publisher will do it…

Would you recommend contacting a larger publisher that handles hundreds of titles every year, or go for a smaller publishing company?

…don’t look at size… only at which ones are open to submissions by unagented new writers… and try them all!…

Mammamaia, I appreciate your offer to contact you, I may be taking you up on that soon! Just out of curiosity, what is your experience in working with children’s authors?

…don’t know what you mean by ‘experience’… in number, i’ve probably worked with several hundred over the years i’ve been doing this…

…in how i do it and how it works out, that varies from simple proofing a ms to giving a virtual course in how to write for children and all but maybe one or two have been satisfied and very grateful for the help…

…as far as what my own experience is, i’m a mother of 7 who started buying books for my kids before they were born and haven’t stopped yet, as i’m now grannie to 17 [at latest count], so have bought and read virtually thousands of children’s books in my 70 years… plus having written a few for my own kids and others’ that i never bothered to have published…

…any further questions i’ll be happy to answer either here or by email, if you decide to take me up on the offer…

hugs, m
