I’ve always found complements from editors in the form of paychecks highly desirable but that’s not exactly a heartwarming story so I’ll go with my number two choice: I love it when people remember my stuff years after the fact. I’ll meet up with an old aquaintence (or in some cases a complete stranger) who’s read something I wrote (or, in the case of cartoons, drew) so long ago that I’ve moved on to other projects and largely forgotten about it myself. They might say they really liked a character or a concept, or even just a one-liner in an otherwise forgettable piece. I’m really amazed that they remember and I find it rather touching to realize that, in this day of short attention spans and vapid memories, I authored something that actually stuck in someone’s head.
