But it is by far my favorite kind of compliment about my writing, weird as it is.
What’s weird about it? We all want to be valued as a person, and there’s nothing more personal to me than writing. I write mostly short stories, along with the occasional poem, and they all (whether I intend them to or not) wind up being somewhat auto-biographical. This is why I hate critiquing the work of others–how do I know that the words I took such exception to aren’t the ones this person valued most–or felt best represented their feelings. It’s hard not to take it personally when it’s personal.
My favorite compliment is when they want to read something else. Even if it sometimes means that they didn’t care that much for the first piece they read, it says they see something there that’s worth another shot. I’ll even settle for, “Well, it didn’t completely suck.”
