I lost my job in June. Actually, I didn’t lose it. I still know where it is. They just didn’t want me there anymore. It’s a long, icky story. Anyway, after I cried for about 4 hours, I applied for unemployment (which they fought. It took 8 weeks for me to get it.) The next day, I was offered a job driving for the van service my son uses for developmental therapy. It was just part time, but I was so grateful! Than I started seriously querying. My manuscript was finished and I’d sent out some queries, but I polished (and polished and polished) my letter and kept sending it out there. I was fired on a Thursday. The next Monday, I received my first request for the full manuscript.
I haven’t had an offer yet, but everything’s gotten better and better as far as that goes. I decided to keep my part time job, collect partial unemployment and keep plugging away. I’ve given myself a year from June to pursue my dream with everything I’ve got, and to keep writing.
Cheap will be thrilled to know (actually, he already does) that my son and I are doing just fine with less, and I’m much happier.
Things happen for a reason, and I know this writing gig will happen for me. I know this is just anectdotal, but the whole “door/window” thing is true. Follow your heart. You’ve been given an opportunity to get everything you’ve ever wanted out of life. You’ve been given a gift.
Good on you, brother. Go get ’em!
