Ok, I’m coming into this late, but here it goes . . . 🙂

Piles of auburn leaves rustled in the late morning breeze. Summer slept beneath those leaves; memories of soccer games, picnics and walking barefoot in the park all slumbered quietly there. It was pleasant to remember the times past, times that are no more. Pulling the remnants of Joe’s army coat close she turned. A movement in the distance caught her eye. “More flyby’s, when will they ever stop?” She slid her hand into the coat pocket and felt something there. “Paper… his, last orders.”

The paper was worn and faded from all the times she had read it in hopes it would bring her closer to him. His hands had once touched the paper that she now touched, and this comforted her because it was almost as if she were touching his hands. She pressed the crumpled paper to her lips kissing it delicately as she breathed in its essence. Distracted, she slips the papers into the opposite pocket, feeling as she does so another piece of paper. A receipt… Unfolding the slick paper, she reads aloud, “Dale’s Depot,” she turns it over in her hands “There’s only one item, but what would he need an old flint lock for?” Looking at the amount he’d spent, thinking of the bills she could have paid, she felt a moment’s irritation. Her eyes scanned the date on the receipt… “Uhh!” She gasped.
