When Ian Rankin was writing his first novel, about a serial killer who preyed upon young girls, he went to the local police station and asked some questions. His questions sounded very similar to a real-life case they were working on, and he actually fell under suspicion for a while. It sounds funny, but if you start asking police questions like that, or if you ask a doctor what would happen if you stabbed a person in a certain way–well, it’s a real possibility you might get some first-hand experience about what a police interrogation is like–after which, you might be on their “watch list.”
