My last book dealt with upper-middle class domestic violence. To that end, I visited a battered women’s shelter, talked with a few people who worked in that industry, talked with the police department about how such calls go down, and did a ton of online research into the psychology of battered women and of the batterer. It was a serious eye-opener.
My current book deals with murder, so I haven’t done any real-life research yet, but if my husband continues to work from home I might have the opportunity to experience first hand some of my research … hah! I have talked with forensics experts, detectives, a CSI guy on the police force (he does to the photos), and joined the local chapter of Sisters in Crime.
No place I feel uncomfortable so far, but I can see where your research might end up raising a few flags along the way… 🙂
