Whether you write in present or past tense is up to you, but speaking for myself I must say I absolutely loathe present tense narratives. Present tense is supposed to make the action more immediate, but to me it has the opposite effect: it sounds artificial, pretentious, and affected. In fact, I refuse to read a novel written in present tense. And I am not alone. Some publishers even say up front that they do not want stories written in present tense.

However, this is a matter of opinion. Some best sellers have been written in present tense, so apparently many readers are not bothered by it. My wife doesn’t mind it at all.

But why take a chance? Past tense will not turn anyone off, as it is the norm for stories and novels. Present tense will turn at least some (maybe more than some) readers off. I’d go with past tense.
