JWC – 2009-10-07 7:19 AM “3. You must refrain from rewriting, except to editorial order.” This is the first time I’ve ever seen this. Everything else seems to indicate that, “Writing is rewriting.” What does Heinlein mean here, and is he really at odds with the latter piece of advice? Thanks.

It’s a temptation to show our work to others, espcially family members and friends, who want to give their advice on our writing. Sometimes the temptatiion is to make those “changes.” Or, we keep looking over a chapter and spending all of our time on fixing.  Thus, we spend so much time on rewriting that the piece loses its original intent.

What that rule means is once a piece is completed, it is completed and goes to the publisher or editor that you are submitting to. Make changes only if they ask for the changes.
