I knew exactly what you were talking about in your initial post. For many years I hated to read anything other than the bible. If a book or story didn’t grab me in the first few lines I’d toss it. It was not until I started to write seriously that I began to read. I still toss anything that does not grab me in the first few lines, but I go through many, many more books:) The one surprising thing to come out of my writing is a love for reading poetry.
I am with James, life is too short to be making yourself do anything you hate to do. But, I also think it beneficial to seek out those writers who can grab you by the throat and not let you go until the end:)
