Being an actual poet (oh the shame of it!), I guess I can see both sides. There’s a lot of pretention out there, a lot of academic vaguery parading as art, but there’s also a lot of intensely beautiful work done by people who devote their whole lives to it. And it does take a while to understand the form.
In a way, it’s actually MORE courageous than prose, because there is no financial reward whatsoever. And I would encourage any prose artist to undertake at least a little of it, because there’s nothing better for honing your linguistic and imagistic skills. I think of it as my personal R&D space.
Er…you kinda lost me there. The whole thing about poets being brave because there’s no financial reward. I play TONS of Street FIghter II, and nobody pays me for it…but I wouldn’t call my playing brave…
