San Diego’s resident poetry guru Steve Kowit has this to say,
“… poetry is communication, so there must be a message and it is the poet’s job to make the message clear.”

Somehow, I doubt very many other poets would agree with him. Certainly few of the classic poets would. Good poetry makes the reader think, and allows many readers to find individual messages. Or maybe it’s that good poetry always has two “messages,” one on the surface, and a second under the surface.
Probably the biggest mistake “internet poets” make is writing poetry that has a clear, unambigous message.
