94% of professors think they are better than average teachers
90% of people think they are better than average drivers.
It’s classic overconfidence in one’s abilities.
I once gave a speech at one of my company’s conferences. There were about 400 in the audience.
I asked everybody to put their hand up, and to put it down if they thought they were a worse than average driver. About 30 percent of the hands went down.
Again I asked them to put their hands up if they had children, about 200 hands went up, and to put it down if they thought they were a worse than average parent. About 10 hands went down.
Finally I asked them all to put their hands up, and to put them down if they thought they were a worse than average employee. One hand went down.
…and this was depsite them knowing that a large chunk of the speech would be about behavioural psychology.
We have a remarkable tendancy to believe our own propaganda.
By the way I’m a fabulous writer and will become Britain’s most populat fiction writer.
