cantwrite – 2008-05-27 9:16 AM How can I express “startled”? As if you turned around, turned back and someone was standing right in front of you. Is it “Umf..” I want to express a feeling of alarm, fright and OMG.

This is a good question about expressing emotions in general. I have seen many ways of doing this in my reading. You can just state the emotion. “I was startled to find her standing right in front of me.” Or you can describe your bodily reactions. “My heart jumped into my throat. She was standing right in front of me!” Or you can verbalize a reaction in your text, as in “Oh my god! She was standing right in front of me!” Or verbalize a, uh, verbalization, such as, “I turned around. ‘Ack!’ I cried. She had appeared in front of me as if out of thin air.”

I dunno. Just some ideas. Good luck!
