I’ve been away a spell, but it’s good to see I haven’t missed much in my absence.
For what it is worth, I learned a lot down in critique. Prior to participating in this forum I had zero publishing successes. A couple years later, and I’m starting to get a few “yeses” to my short story queries and (finally) got one into a print anthology.
It is what you make of it. I think it is a fine place to start and for many writers, and it will be the first time some will have somebody besides dear aunt Zelda reading their stories. (Zelda always likes what you write and considers you the next Nicholas Sparks). Once you get a feel for the rough and tumble of real-world feedback, you either swim on upstream or turn back to the comfort of your small pond.
Just to reinforce James’ comment about a single reader NOT liking a pro, published writer. I just finished and was very disappointed in Nicholas Sparks, The Wedding. Though I really liked The Notebook. So, even one author can have ups and downs, and Sparks sold enough books that I am sure my opinion doesn’t count anyway.
