No one is saying you don’t know what you’re saying, John. 🙂 You do, and you’re right, readers matter. If they don’t buy your book or story, if you don’t give them their dollars worth, you’re in doodoo. Absolutely right. But editors and publishers are the ones you sell your work to. They are the ones who decide it’s something their readers will most likely enjoy and want to read. And their careers depend on getting that right most of the time. There’s also pesky advertisers in magazines, etc, that have to be taken into acct and on and on. So, the reader’s opinion matters–but if I’m writing a piece I want published, the first opinion, most important opinion I care about, is that of the person cutting the check. And publishers and editors are looking for what’s marketable. The problem with critiques is I have yet to find anyone, particularly your avg reader who can tell me if what I’ve written is marketable with any kind of accuracy. That’s all.
