Huh. The critiques I’ve browsed normally say something to the effect of, “I liked this, but you might consider that”… And a good thing, too, if for no other reason than we have some younger members just sitting down to try their hand. A nasty “this isn’t worth the bits it took to send it” would not only NOT be helpful, but might actually be harmful, and in any event, completely UNNECCESSARY.
I don’t think this was an opinion, I think it was posted to stir the pot. And normally, I’d just blow it off. Well. Maybe. But I know that Traci down there in SciFi makes an effort to read every single thing posted in her domain. Do you have any idea how much time that must take? She’s a volunteer. And when she can, she whips out her pink sharpie and she goes at it. It takes TIME to read these posts. If you don’t find the input valuable, then don’t ask for it. If you want input without the niceties, ask for comments to be PMd and specify you’d like them mean and uncensored. And if you only want experienced writers reading your stuff, ask. You might not get much, but you could try that rather than insinuate that the time people voluntarily spend reading and commenting on your material is wasted … by you AND by them. That’s just rude. And ungrateful. And that’s my true opinion.
