This morning I awoke to a string of error messages on my laptop:
PXE E61: Media Test Failure, Check Cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM
So…I restarted my less-than-two-years-old laptop & everything appeared to be fairly normal. I saved all 4 of my novels onto a jump drive and…I’ve spent the afternoon on Toshiba’s website trying to find some sort of technical advice–NOTHING!! I’ve run diagnostic checks on my PC and the only suspicious message I received camed after the FD Drive check…it said FAIL in red!!! Here’s the scariest thing…three times today I have heard the foreboding “Clunk, clunk, clunk” of a failing hard drive.
Any suggestions??? HELP! HELP! HELP! I know I’ve been absent for a while…but maybe someone who remembers me will come to my aid?
Hi Jessica. The message means the Preboot eXecution Environment failed. The last available boot device was probably your network adapter and all prior devices failed as well, including your hard drive. The klunk klunk is enough to replace the hard drive over. Suggest backing up everything and replacing the drive sooner rather than later. I would shut it down until I could manage to do that since the integrity of the data could suffer with use.
