I have a Toshiba Satellite A70 that I bought (received) two Christmases (an actual word?) ago. My housemate owns the exact same model as I do. Our problems with the Toshiba models have been with a failing power source (warranty covered) and a defect whereby the metal speaker plates are not properly grounded (especially the left) and normal static electricity discharges from a finger brushing the metal plate causes the system to crash. We’re each involved in a mass lawsuit through Michael Elihu in Los Angeles. I think we get either $25 cash or a $50 credit voucher for Toshibadirect.com
I don’t know anything about a hard drive problem, but there are a lot of Toshiba-design-related complaints floating around if you google a little.
