WordPerfect X3 is my main word processor, but I use OpenOffice fairly often.  But with either word processor, I also use the freeware version of Notesbrowser. http://www.notesbrowser.com/download/download.html

It sits in the system tray, and gives me the perfect place to keep track of character names, thoughts, ideas, notes, research, etc.

Your milage may vary, but I love it.
