Translators generally do not take into account that there are multiple definitions for a word. Therefore if they had to choose between 5 potential translations for one particular word, they are likely to come up with something that might be amusing/embarrassing to the reader. I have students who try to translate things in their homework. The most awful thing for me to try to grade is when a lot of intellectual language has been put together in grammatically correct sentences that make no sense whatsoever. A lot of sophisticated language that has been haphazardly lumped together. The amateur doesn’t know that it doesn’t make any sense, but the person fluent in that language definitely realizes something is wrong.
I second the suggestion that you should translate something into English from another language, and see how accurate the translation is, before using it. Be very careful before using a translator on anything that is extremely important.
