He leaves the sandy cities
with one last glance
to the place he’s been,
his heart heavy for those
he leaves behind.

His tortured sleep
and heightend senses
are constant companions,
gifts from the hell
he left behind
and the new hell he has entered.

Another gate awaits him
passage to a quiet land
where nights are dreamless
and there’s no anxiety
over the sound
of feet on sand.

Both time and loved ones
guide him to as close
to where he was
before he left
to serve in sandy cities.
