good hair,
no,
not my hair.

isn’t pressed
or compressed.
steamed,
ironed
with hot,
hot heat
ouch…my neck.

good hair
no,
not my hair.

curly,
springy.
locking,
grabbing,
catching

strand.

good hair
no,
not my hair.

doesn’t whip about
as the wind blows.

silky straight
doesn’t
shine so
to attract the
buzzing bees.

doesn’t
wave and flow
in the
middle
of my back.
no, not my hair.

solid
and thick.
coarse,
frizzy,
and funky.

don’t cut it,
perm it,
bleach it,
or weave it.

plastic packages
of color 4B.
dimensions of
extensions,
no, not on me.

no hair appointments
or salon chatter.
my roots
remain the same
on this
tangled mane.

weather vanes
rearrange
but these locks
stand firm.
humidity and heat
will not defeat.

no, not my hair.

each lock
a part of me;
anecdote,
memory,
and story.
reminders that
I am
all me,
and so is

my hair.
