He carries age
like loose change
rattling in his pocket,
a lifetime of pulled teeth
and thorny regrets.

When the playful Harris sparrow
drinking from the parking lot puddle
lifts the weight of years
from his stooped shoulders,
arthritis like a perturbed old woman
with a persimmon screwed
into her face, jabs his back
with the dirty end of her cane
to remind him of the time.
