It’s been brought to my attention that the Critique Central forums are no longer password protected. That has opened up all submissions there to Web “crawlers.” In addition, this could place the submitted works into a published status, thus breaking first-publication rights, which is a very common requirement in negotiations with publishers. Even if the password is easily determined, the fact of being behind such a protection is important to a prospective author’s future business.
I would suggest people remove their work if possible until such time as this particular security problem is resolved. I would also suggest keeping a copy of the above notice, should there be problems for authors submitting work. I don’t know if it will help, but at least it lets any hesitant publishers know what the situation was.
