What makes this spot so great for writers? This is the venue where the Sonoma County branch of the Redwood Writer's Club holds their writer's meetings.  We have a room in the back with lots of food and drink as we listen to the speaker of the month, all of whom are successful and published.

It always looks more crowded than it actually is, so if you're patient or savvy you'll grab a table in one of the corners or near one of the two outlets (if you work on a computer), order a great coffee drink, get a pastry or their fantastic antipasta salad, and you can sit there all day and night without them bothering you as long as you get some refills -- half of the people there practically live there. And despite it being busy and sometimes loud it is surprisingly easy to chose to engage and pay attention to what's around you or just let it all wash over you like good atmosphere and fade to the background while you immerse yourself in your inner writing world. In a nutshell:

A) They make the best no nonsense espresso drinks (don't dare order a frappucino or any other fruity-starbucks type coffee drinks, you'll be banished), but they also serve decent wine and other beverages
B) it's great for people watching, from tourists, to artists, poets, musicians, business people, producers (Coppola's Zoetrope is just down the street), young, old, and some GREAT "characters" come in there - famous people are there sometimes too - it's no cookie cutter chain
C) It's steeped in creative history in a neighborhood rich with creative history
D) When you're done there are a hundred restaurants in a three block radius, pubs that play local music, a jazz club or two, and BEST of all the famous City Lights Book store is two blocks away.

I've been hanging out there and writing there since I was a teenager (a long time ago) and love it!

Buzzard's Backyard Barbecue is home to the Central Coast Writers chapter of California Writers Club. Interesting stuff happens on our
meeting nights.

The Central Coast Writers branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month except December. Our meeting place has changed over the years, and we're very excited about our latest venue, Buzzard's Backyard BBQ, adjacent to the TraveLodge, 2030 N. Fremont, Monterey. Check our Calendar page for specifics.

It's great because it features readings, conversations, book-signings and other events by great authors--and almost all events are free or very low-cost.

Previous and upcoming writers include: Salman Rushdie, ZZ Packer, Gore Vidal, Khaled Hosseini, Tobias Wolff, Kimiko Hahn, Harold Schechter, Azar Nafisi, Simon Winchester, Joyce Carol Oates, Maxine Hong Kingston and many more.

You can buy a coffee at the downstairs cafe and hang out there to write--or you can carry it with you through the library. Yes, this library allows you to browse books with a beverage in your hand.

You can attend many free literary events (such as run by the CLA--www.litart.org).

You can hang out on chatty floors or quiet floors.

You can take a ride on the gorgeous glass elevators.

You can see Beethoven's hair in the Beethoven Room.

You can look at old maps of your neighbhorhood in the California Room.

You can look at manuscripts written in Steinbeck's hand in the Steinbeck Center.

You can take your kids to the amazing children's section, chock-full with books, toys, games and kids'-size furniture.

The MLK is a rare library in that it's a combination city/university library. It's also the largest public library of its type west of the Mississippi.
