On the subject of fiction and its relevance, I have wondered about this, to be honest.

I've asked myself WHY write fiction? HOW is that helping anybody?

Then I realized it's helped me. It's a way to escape, but it's also a way to learn certain values by "example" -- even if the example is set by fictional characters. It also makes you think, for me, at least, it makes me think more than any non-fiction book can.

And it's fun. :) I think people underestimate the value of having fun.It's my belief that no one can ever be the best version of themselves unless they have at least a bit of fun here and there.
========

most authors write to be 'creative' and have FUN. some are trying to make money. a few perhaps trying to achieve both.
some who are successful do it to make a living. to them it is WORK and not so much fun as deadlines and constraints confine their flexibility.
a few do it to push political or religious views.

to readers it is entertainment like a movie where they generate their own images from the text.
to publishers it is all about making money. with a few exceptions like academic presses and religious publishers.

most books have no impact and do nothing.
a few do change things, some for the good many for the worse.

to push a viewpoint and change minds, a non fiction book is much a better vehicle than fiction.

That, of course, ignores the novelists listed earlier who all made a great impacts on society. :roll:

And you have evidence to back that up, I'm sure. Evidence that you're about to post here, I'm equally sure.

they are persuaded much better with propaganda which is all fiction anyway, even if not a story

As Mark Twain (you know, the fiction writer AND essayist) famously said, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Nonfiction can be lies, too.
