Teh best writing advice evar! :)

Postby Dreaming Imrryr » Wed Jun 28, 2017 7:12 pm

The title is tongue in cheek because the best advice is subjective.

But I like this advice and it applies to almost any aspect of life.

The advice comes from the martial arts legend, Bruce Lee:

"Absorb what is useful. Reject what is useless. And add what is uniquely your own."

(That is not an exact quote because I've found different variations on the quote and I don't know which one is the correct one.)

I have a modification of Bruce Lee's advice: "Absorb and adapt what is useful, to fit your style and needs. Reject what is useless. And add your own unique techniques if they work for you."

I consider myself an indie (independent) author, and one of the greatest advantages to being an indie author is the ability to experiment and the above advice works well with experimentation. One can experiment with different price points, cover styles, writing styles, fiction genres, etc.

One can even mix and match two or more genres. Or even create entirely new genres like the various "punk" genres that have sprouted up like the original cyberpunk and then steampunk, deiselpunk, biopunk, and lots more. Another new genre is grimdark.

I'm on the verge of creating my own genre but it isn't coming together (yet).
