How do you write a book proposal?

Postby aldentan » Mon Jun 12, 2017 8:53 am

Hi guys,

So how do you write a book proposal?

How do you make a strong argument that your book, or book-to-be will be a good one for audience everywhere?

How do you do it ESPECIALLY if you aren't famous or have a super strong platform?

Isn't it the same drivel for agents everywhere if they hear about how passionate you are and how determined you are to want to make it work?

Just to be clear - are you asking about a book proposal (nonfiction) or a query (fiction)? I ask because of the comment about agents, which aren't used as often with nonfiction as with fiction.

At any rate...

For nonfiction, here's a start: https://janefriedman.com/start-here-how-to-write-a-book-proposal/

For fiction (query), another starting point: http://www.agentquery.com/writer_hq.aspx

There are many other articles/blogs online about how to write either ;)

Also, for fiction, if you can keep your query to less than 300 words, great.

Oh! I didn't know a proposal referred solely to non-fiction.

Thanks!

So yeah, what if you don't have a platform? What if you aren't famous? What if you don't have a strong social media following? Anyone? I am going to look it up.

Also, why is it fiction doesn't require a platform?

Well, a lot of people claim you need one for fiction, particularly in self-publishing, but I think they're confusing that with publicity. I have a lot of favorite authors and I neither know nor care if they have a website or blog or anything else, for that matter (other than another book coming out). Plus, I always worry they're going to say something on their blogs that makes me hate them personally and thus ruin my enjoyment of their writing. I've seen a lot of stuff written by agents and publishing editors and they tend toward using the phrase "social media presence" versus "platform", and none other than very small publishers seem to place any great need for having them.
