The Spammers Have Won

Postby rob-lost » Thu Jun 08, 2017 4:48 pm

Once upon a time, companies went to bat for their customers. Companies valued loyalty, and showed it.

Now, apparently, Writer's Digest has done a MUCH stronger job of ejecting customers than they have the spammers.

I don't feel valued OR wanted by WD. So I'm going to honor the company's wishes.

writing.com's forums are full of fluff, but my login works there.

Have fun until WD shuts these forums down entirely. I don't see them doing anything else.

not sure it was the spammers

benign neglect led to little use and a death spiral

what was the reason for the last change that crippled its usability
was it an intentional crippling to get users to stop coming here
or was somebody overworked doing something and not caring about a side task they were told to do
or ............ ?????

it would be nice if brian or pls could fill us in on the history
this was a good forum 20 years ago

so what really happened

The cause has no bearing on me. The spammers are still posting. I'm... not. Not with what I consider to be my actual username.

If that's not victory for the spammers, I'm not sure what else would define it so.

WD, you've lost more than my participation in this forum. My subscription to your magazine is run out and I'll subscribe to one of the British journals before I'll renew with WD. Additionally, I'm not buying anything from your press, either.

You've lost me as a customer.

And no, it's NOT because you don't want to run these forums anymore. That's a business decision I disagree with but can respect.

Your decision to allow me to languish without owning that decision? A company with such little ethics in that regard doesn't deserve my money.

the spammers are mostly stuck in introductions

i have no idea what the problem is
it may be mere neglect

i once found a washington post site that they had forgotten about and asked abuot a post i found on it
they admitted it was old and they hadnt done anything with it in years but it still existed

i might not buy anything from their press
but only because most of their books are just too basic and not that useful

anybody on twitter?
try tweeting brian and jessica at the @ they list in the magazine
maybe enough tweets would get an answer wrt what is happening

This isn't a years-old, static page. This is the very first link under "Community." It's the first non-advertisement search results when you use Google to search for "Writer's Forum."

And WD is killing it without having the decency to admit it.

One person, or two, is beside the point.

This isn't about moderators, or administrators.

A business decision has been made. One that leaves customers in the lurch.

Rob's comment is probably the most accurate I've seen about forum problems. FYI phpBB hasn't been updated for about two years now.

===========

yet it doesnt seem to have the problems we have on all the other sites using it

did WD change servers?
did they change version ?
did they make any changes to the new one?
did they forget to put in the old choices and took the defaults for the new one?

And now my "real" ID works. Looks like someone took a look, finally.

We'll see, I guess.
Slowly putting together a "replacement" forum at http://writerswriting.proboards.com.

It's still under construction, but come take a look.
