Publishing Poems

Postby kris0707 » Fri Jun 02, 2017 1:13 pm

Hello, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct place so I apologize if I'm in the wrong area. I've been away from this site for quite some time catching up on my reading in hopes of becoming a better writer. I recently took a college creative writing course and became interested in writing poems as well. I still prefer telling stories over poetry, but I was just wondering if I were to ever attempt getting my poems published - how different is it from publishing a novel and where would I go? Is it any easier or harder than publishing a Short Story or Novel? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

writers market will have info on getting published for most things you write
there may be a separate poets market with guidance for poems exclusively

big difference
depends
harder

ask specific questions for better answers

Thanks much for the reply! Sorry for not being more specific. I will look into Writer's Market a bit. I've never been published, though so since it's harder getting poems published I might hold off and try getting one of my stories published first. Thanks again for the info.

depends what your goal is

you can always self publish
do it free with amazon kindle or createspace *IF* you dont buy their needless 'services'

they might have a requirement for enough poems to equal a small book
or more than one short story to equal a small book
but check their rules

you can always pay a service to publish anything
but why do that if you dont want to give it to friends or try to sell it somehow

if you just want a booklet to small book then see the ads in back of writers digest
and if you have a big book they would print that too

stay away from the vanity publishers that will attach a vacuum to your bank account and offer little of value

Thanks so much for the advice! I'm pretty sure one of my Short Stories has actually gotten to a point where it's considered a Novella. Is that still small enough for the ads in the back of writer's digest?
My professor recommended this site to me as a good place to start as far as getting published. Was definitely worried about getting scammed or running into vanity publishers so very thankful for this site.

the ads in the back of WD print things
you pay them to make your book
those are not publishers that pay you

see WM if you want to see how to submit to magazines or book publishers and possibly be paid for your work
some literary magazines dont pay money just in copies of the edition your story was in

(Have to cut and paste as apparently still can't get links to work here :? )
