DOUBLE Book Contest Winner!!

Postby mikeyboy_esq » Thu May 25, 2017 12:47 pm

CAN'T BELIEVE my lucky stars! A few months ago, I entered my 2 non-fiction books in a contest and BOTH were selected. This book awards contest had over 1,500 entries this year and less than 20% were chosen as winners or finalists. Woo hoo! :D

My debut book about college teaching tips was chosen as the winner of the 2017 International Book Awards in the Education/Academic category, and my latest book (a self-publishing guide) was selected as a finalist of the 2017 International Book Awards in the Business: Writing & Publishing category. I feel blessed!

Congratulations, mikeyboy. It's heartening to read such good news. Go win another contest! :D

Brien & Oldtimer,
Thank you for the kind words of support! Some days, it is the little victories (like this book award) and the friendly words of my fellow authors that keep me going.

Oops, I did it again!

Oops, I did it again! :D

I entered both of my books in the 2017 Readers' Favorite book award contest, and yesterday I discovered that both were selected! My debut book about college teaching tips won the Bronze Medal in the Non-fiction Education genre, and my second book (a self-publishing guide) was named Honorable Mention in the Non-fiction Writing/Publishing genre. As a newbie author, I welcome as much recognition and exposure as I can get. :P

Did you have to pay to enter the contest?

I entered a free contest once.
There was one winner.
Everybody else was second place.

I wonder what value these awards would have if they are not a name like the Newbery Medal, Nobel Prize for Literature, PEN/Faulkner Award. Pulitzer Prize, or similar one with name recognition and publicity in national media for winners.

There are a lot of awards and prizes available via literary journals and university journals. Rightly or wrongly, I tend to view the "reputation" of the award to the prize awarded. But my go-to for contests is Poets & Writers, since they vet the submissions and has a good reputation itself. But it can definitely get expensive if you get too involved with them, so I would definitely look closely at prize versus cost.
