Finished it! Should I take a step back now?

Postby Mrs Potato Head » Fri Sep 30, 2016 2:57 pm

Hey all...newbie here.

Long story short. Wrote 50-60K words from April - September. Read the whole thing, decided I wanted to change it up (grr). Ended up tossing entire novel and then writing 60K words in about 15 days or so (I was on fire!).

Now I'm ready to read-thru, but I worry that I'm just TOO CLOSE to the material right now. As in, it will be too hard for me to see things objectively because it is my baby I just finished. Do most people immediately start reading it once they type END, or do they give it a cooling off period?

Thanks in advance!

It's commonly suggested to put it away anywhere from a few days to six months. Some folks don't take a break at all.
At least have a little party!

"It seems rather like wanting to be ... a writer, rather than wanting to write. It should be a by-product, not a thing in itself. Otherwise, it's just an ego trip." - Roger Zelazny

It's really not that hard. Just tell me a story.

It's up to you. "Most" say a lot of things, but "most" generally have no name, and no track record. "Most", like "They" and "Them", are often created by the internet version of telephone tag. Some set work aside, some do not. I know far more professional writers who do not sit it aside than who do. Far, far, far more.

I never set anything aside. Very few prolific writers do. The only one I know who does is Stephen King. And he really isn't very prolific compared to most.

I don't even wait until I end the story. I edit and rewrite as I go, just as Dean Koontz and Kurt Vonnegut, and when I type the end, it's ready for submission.

This means don't worry about what "most" do. :Most is a mythical figure, less common in the real world than unicorns. Do what works for you, not what works for "most".

It's probably good to take a little break, like one of the others said, so you can have a fresher outlook. What is the piece about?

I take breaks alot when I'm writing, particularly when I hit writer's block, simply because when I come back to it I realize where I was going or how I painted myself into a corner so, yeah, I'd say put it down for a little while before looking over it again. A clearer head will show you what works and what doesn't.
