Jean Auel's books

Postby petsnponies » Sun Aug 04, 2013 2:56 am

I read these a while ago and loved them. Such a wonderful idea and so well researched.

However was anyone else bitterly disappointed with the last book?

I was expecting so much, perhaps a reunion with her old clan and her son, perhaps she would pave the way for acceptance of the clan people, maybe show everyone how to tame and ride horses, and the revelation that it was MEN that created children.. well that lead nowhere either. I found it all very trivial, with the main characters yet again falling out with and hurting each other.

Gosh I was so upset with it that I never finished it. :/ My husband thought it was so funny because I sulked for days over it

Well, I wouldn't say the research was all that good, and the world was not at all the way she presented it, nor, certainly, was human language.

I liked first book, but found them completely unreadable after second.

Well, as one who was there at the time, James, I guess you would know... :D

Definitely not scholarship-supported interpretations on her part. She took a lot of liberties in order to make her tale accessible as an ' airport read'. Not terribly original in concept, either. No less than William Golding had already explored the theme in 'The Inheritors' (written twenty yrs earlier) and he had done so very robustly.

Auel's works were simply light, fun, mass-market reads intriguing to many for the freshness of the setting. There's nothing really wrong with them as long as one remembers that they're not meant to be regarded very seriously. Just enjoyable, and *slightly* thought-provoking escapism.

Sadly, they've recently become easy targets for the despicable, always-looking-for-suspects, pc-police.

Though I liked the series "Earth's Children" as a group-work and I liked the various installments to varying degrees, they were clearly romanticized and sanitized adult fiction. Adult fiction, of course, because some of the scenes when Ayla and Jondalar are "getting it on" certainly are a bit explicit for kids, including mor than one case of Ayla having a "big O" and such topics as oral sex - plus attempted or consummated rape (in "The Plains of Passage" and "Land of Painted Caves" for two cases).

JA speculated on one point that I would have to agree was correct: People are people and will be as petty or vain or jealous or kind or generous in any setting, including the stone-age cultures. So in that sense, her characters are believable though the important factor of Ayla's pharaceutical knowledge is maybe a bit of a stretch. But I agree it is necessary to the story that she have SOME immediately important abilities. Beyond that, her stories are a bit repetitive and often go far afield into details that interminably set mental images, scenes, situations. But all too often she takes too long to get to a pay-off point in the story, substituting a travelogue for real action.

I'll say one thing about that E.C. series - If something that loosely written and in some cases boringly repetitive can sell that well then there is hope for me.
