Going traditional after self-publishing

Postby thefey » Thu Oct 01, 2015 2:14 pm

I self-published my book last year, and it has been a hard road. I've been thinking about querying agents and going traditional, but I have read that agents/publishers want to see sales before they consider representing a previously self-published novel. Being on a budget, marketing has been hard, so I have had trouble promoting my work. Thus, I don't have much to show in the way of sales. Is there a way I can still pitch my book to agents?

Sure you can, but you hurt your chances greatly. You will have to disclose this in the query.

It may be better to query with the next novel.

Take Terry's advice. Definitely move on, write the second novel, and pitch it. Good luck.

Agree. Move on with the second novel - if that works out, then you can see about a 're-do' on the original.
"It seems rather like wanting to be ... a writer, rather than wanting to write. It should be a by-product, not a thing in itself. Otherwise, it's just an ego trip." - Roger Zelazny

It's really not that hard. Just tell me a story.

If you sell, say, a thousand copies of your self-published novels, agents and publishers will come after YOU. A couple hundred? Nope.
