I, too, was puzzled about how to promote my book. I searched and gathered two dozen sites that will promote your book free of charge. They do have paid options as well, but if you keep scrolling, you'll get to the Free form. I went from 150 downloads the first time I did my KDP promotion to 750 this time. I'm not sure it will help me sell more books (I've sold a grand total of three in the three days after the promo ended) but my ranking went from around 800,000 (paid) to 113,064. Hopefully, I'll get some new reviews. Anyway, here's a link to a page that has the list. Good luck!

If you use Amazon Associate links to market your book, you should check out the Genius link service.

It basically ensures you don't miss out on the benefit of Amazon users in international markets who check out your links.

There's a great article explaining it here - ... link-tool/

Terry - beyond having a great cover and writing more books I actually think that the author also has to play an active part in marketing. I found that reaching out to influencers in my particular area helped quite a bit to garner attention. Even though I went the traditional publishing route publishers don't do a great deal on the marketing side so I had to help get the word out. I agree with you that spamming and being over the top aggressive are bad tactics but letting the world know your book is out there is half the battle

You should have actually did market your book before you were able to publish it. But if you are to market it just after you self-published, you can ask a publishing company to do the marketing for you. It will give you more chances in marketing successfully.
